Money Saving Mom – 5 Smart Ways to Save on the Water Bill

If you are a money saving Mom, you know that the water bill easily gets high when little children are around, not to mention the older ones! There are many things that you can do to save on the water bill right now and for the future.

Here are 5 smart ways to save on the water bill. A money saving Mom should stay on top of these and make use of them!

1. Don’t Waste!

It should be obvious, but honestly, do you start to shower with the first water that comes out of the shower head? Many choose to let it run for a while to get the right temperature. This is perfectly normal, but consider how many times a day you are doing this. If each shower starts this way you are wasting water. Try putting a bucket in your shower and let the water run into this. You will soon see just how much water you are wasting and you can use the water from the bucket for many things like flushing the toilet, adding to regular baths and cleaning floors with.

2. Washing Hands

Your kids know that they need to wash their hands but are you there to supervise the activity each time? Make an effort to be there with them and teach them how to use a minimal amount of water. It is possible to use a wash cup. Wet the hands, soap and then rinse with the water in the wash cup. Over time, this can save a lot of money on the water bill.

3. Flushing the Toilet

Ok, this suggestion is only for people who can stomach it. If your children are only doing number ones, tell them not to flush. There is really no need to flush after each number 1, especially not in the middle of the night.

4. Dishes

Don’t do dishes under running water. If you have to do them by hand, soap them first and then rinse them in a pool of water which can be switched if it gets too soapy to clean of the detergent of the tools. In some cases it could save you money to simply use a dishwasher since it will use the same amount of water for many dishes at once.

5. The Garden

Get yourself a barrel to collect water from the roof in. You will most likely be able to place more than one around your house. When it rains you get water for free, and this water can be used in the garden and for washing the car. You might even want to use it for water games in the summer, but only if your barrels are clean.

Hope you enjoyed these tips and that they can help you become even more effective as a money saving Mom!
